Local photographer teaches others through workshops

Local photographer teaches others through workshops

March 30, 2018

We at HERE magazine value quality design and photography. So when a local photographer takes their gifts and shares them with others, we applaud. The more quality photography out in the world, the better.

Michelle Vergara-Cox of Munster is running From the Heart Workshop, for those looking to get into wedding photography, on April 15 at Galleria Marchetti in Chicago. We asked Michelle about the workshop and how it all began.

How did you get started in photography?
I developed an interest and passion for photography when I was in college. That was where I took my first photography classes. In 2011 I started a business in photography and have been enjoying that as my career ever since. I am primarily a wedding photographer; however, I also do portraits and events.

What is your style of (wedding) photography?
I would describe my style as classic, romantic and emotion-centered lifestyle photography.

What made you decide to start photography workshops?
In 2016 I had an intern and during the time she was with me we talked extensively about how to get into the wedding photography industry and how to start a business. She was just graduating from a local art college with a degree in photography. She spoke often about how she learned many technical things at school, but she (and her classmates) longed for “real world” knowledge on starting and sustaining a photography business. I realized there was a need for workshops or education for new photographers interested in building successful businesses. That was when I became inspired to create something for photographers in this niche.

Describe your workshop… what can attendees expect?
This workshop is for photographers that are interested in starting a wedding photography business or are interested in adding wedding photography into an existing business.

Together we will break down some of the biggest questions and concerns that new photographers have before, during and after the wedding day. We will discuss the client experience, networking, marketing and have an open forum Q and A. Additionally we will have several hours of hands-on learning. I have planned two gorgeous styled wedding sessions for all attendees to photograph throughout the day. Not only will they learn how I would photograph the scenes (with and without our bride and groom models) but they will be able to leave with updated wedding portfolios.

Knowledge is very important when starting a business but as a photographer, having a great portfolio is also necessary when attracting new clients.

What are the workshop details?
The workshop will take place on Sunday, April 15, from 8:30am to 5pm at Galleria Marchetti (825 W Erie St, Chicago). Tickets are still available for $499 (full-time students $449). Tickets can be purchased here: fromtheheartworkshop.com/registration.
